He began recording this album in early October 2008, but later that month he claimed that he did not want this to follow Tha Carter III immediately. Following Tha Carter III's achievement of selling over 3 million copies, becoming 2008's best-selling album. Wayne mentioned the possibility of this album as early as September 2008. The album was originally intended to be released on however, it has been pushed back to AUGUST 29th, 2011. Tha Carter IV is the upcoming ninth studio album by American rapper Lil Wayne.
